A collector asked if I could create a painting of their son at their summer home in northern New England. The photographs they presented captured the late afternoon ambiance, but their son's expressions in the pictures were all in a deep reflective mood.
Working with them, I suggested we schedule a photo shoot with a professional photographer and light their son similarly to the outdoor photographs and act out different expressions and moods. During our conversations, I discovered that their son's birthday was on the Fourth of July. I suggested including a sparkler - to give him a prop to react too.
Well, when all the photos came back, his expression with the sparkles in his eyes led easily to its title - "Summer Sparks" was the home run, hands down.
